Isang aso ang nanatili sa tabi ng katawan ng isang lalaki na nalunod sa isang malayong lugar ng Otago. Tinawag ang mga serbisyong pang-emergency sa Jack’s Bay Bar noong 10:40 ng umaga noong Sabado matapos ang mga ulat na dalawang tao at isang aso ang nahulog sa labis mula sa isang bangka na nagsisikap na tumawid sa sandbar ng Catlins River. Nagsimula ito ng isang misyon sa paghahanap at pagsagip kasama ang mga boluntaryo ng Coastguard mula sa Dunedin at isang helikopter.
Ang katawan ng 55-taong-gulang na si Gareth Pearson mula sa Milton ay natagpuan sa isang kalapit na beach, kasama ang kanyang aso na si Mitt, sa tabi niya. Nagawa si Mitt na lumangoy sa kaligtasan sa magaspang na panahon. Ang kapatid ni Pearson ay natagpuan sa ilang mga bato na malapit. Ipinagdiriwang nila ang ika-60 kaarawan ng kapatid nang mangyari ang insidente.
