A Dunedin secondary school plans to open a new campus at a former lakeside lodge near Te Anau.
John McGlashan College has bought the former Fiordland National Park Lodge site, located 30 km north of Te Anau on the highway to Milford Sound. The site, which includes 20 motel units, 26 rooms, a wharf and a boat ramp, will be used for school camps and outdoor activities.
Principal Neil Garry said that the site would provide the pupils with “endless opportunities for adventure-based learning”. Pupils will be able to participate in alpine tramping, bushcraft, climbing, kayaking and sailing.
The school hopes to open the new campus next April.
