Up to 950 new houses will be built on a 50-hectare block of land in Waipukurau, Hawke’s Bay.
Development of the site, which has been occupied by a disused hospital for over two decades, has been made possible by a grant of $10.9 million from central government.
Central Hawke’s Bay Mayor Alex Walker said the funding would be used to install new pipelines for wastewater and drinking water, a new water reservoir, and to upgrade the stormwater and roading infrastructure.
The upgrades will allow the owners of various parts of the block to begin developments.
“For years we’ve shared the community’s frustration that this prime residential land has sat empty while housing is so scarce,” Walker told news source Stuff.
“A mix of housing for whānau (family), retirees, established residents and people new to Central Hawke’s Bay will become an exciting reality thanks to this Government funding, landowners and our partners,” she said.
A public preview of the proposed developments will be held at the Pakeke Centre on Pōrangahau Rd on November 26 between 9 – 11 am.
Waipukurau is one of several centres to benefit from the Government’s recently announced plan to spend $540 million on infrastructure across the country.
