With the approach of summer, the Western Bay of Plenty is gearing up for a surge in tourists and holidaymakers. This influx is set to boost job opportunities for the locals.
The Ministry of Social Development, partnering with Toi Ohomai Institute of Technology and local businesses, is hosting the Tauranga Community Employment expo. This event aims to bridge the gap between employers and job seekers, including fresh graduates.
Businesses in retail and hospitality are actively seeking employees for the upcoming tourist season. Moreover, there are job vacancies in health, food production, government, logistics, and horticulture sectors. With the kiwifruit summer pruning season on the horizon, orchard roles are also up for grabs.
Interested job seekers are invited to the Queen Elizabeth Youth Centre’s Memorial Hall on October 11, from 10 am to 12.30 pm. Here, they can use virtual reality headsets to simulate tasks and experience work across different industries.
Additionally, those looking to enhance their skills can discuss their aspirations with educational and training providers.
Bay of Plenty’s Regional Commissioner for Social Development, Graham Allpress, emphasised the significance of work for individuals’ progress. He stated, “Our clients have the desire to work, and our mission is to provide all the necessary support to help them secure employment.”
Highlighting the purpose of the expo, Allpress said, “This event is crafted to unite ready-to-work individuals with recruiting employers, fostering dialogues between them.”
Business owners considering hiring can also join the event and explore potential recruitment solutions.
For those attending, the community support agency Good Neighbour will host a sausage sizzle. The expo has no entry fee; attendees can simply walk in.
