Two large sculptures have been spotted above Wellington’s Transmission Gully, causing some confusion among motorists. These sculptures are part of a larger project by philanthropists Gareth and Joanne Morgan.
Last month, drivers on State Highway 1 noticed a giant park bench overlooking the motorway. This followed another massive sculpture, resembling a giant feather, installed two months ago over the former Pauatahanui golf course.
In 2019, the Morgans purchased the land on Paekakariki Hill Road and transformed it into a conservation and recreational area called The Morgans, which still includes a golf course.
It’s unclear if the Morgans are planning to create a sculpture garden in Wellington to compete with Gibbs Farm. A spokesperson stated that the bench is one of several sculptures being installed as part of an ongoing project. More works are expected to be added in the next three months.
The site should be open to visitors by the end of April. Last year, the Morgans installed a 16-meter steel rainbow-colored bridge on their land, which is visible from the southbound lanes but not from the northbound traffic.
