The Western Bay of Plenty District Council is addressing a critical road maintenance issue after a local resident alerted them in a unique way. Community members near the Te Puna roundabout have been filling unsightly potholes with flower plants to draw attention to the problem. These floral potholes are located in the lane between Te Puna Road and State Highway 2, near a BP Truckstop, a petrol station and Te Puna Four Square.
The council became aware of the potholes last week when a concerned resident contacted them. Ashley Hall, a Transportation Area Engineer at the council, said the repair work was immediately added to their maintenance schedule with high priority. They expect to fill the holes this week.
Hall acknowledged that due to the high demands on their inspectors, some maintenance work might get overlooked. He expressed gratitude to the public for alerting them to such issues. If anyone notices any road maintenance issues, they are encouraged to contact the council immediately, either through the Antenno app or by calling 0800 926 732.
While Hall appreciated the creativity of planting flowers in potholes, he pointed out that it’s not a practical or safe solution. He humorously suggested planting hydrangeas, which are colorful and durable in hot weather, but only in personal driveways.
