This Sunday, March 3, Tauranga City is hosting a free family fun day to celebrate National Children’s Day. The event, organized by Tauranga City Council, will feature performances, face painting, arts and crafts, superheroes, and more.
The event will take place in six different activity zones across the city, including the waterfront, the Cargo Shed, Willow St, and He Puna Manawa-Tauranga Library. Kids will have the opportunity to try out circus tricks, sit in a police car, and even get a glimpse of the Civic Precinct construction zone.
Gareth Wallis, TCC city development and partnerships general manager, emphasized that Children’s Day is about celebrating our children and the important role we all play in creating an environment where they can flourish. It’s also a chance to thank the community for their patience during the city’s transformation and to highlight the progress of some developments.
The Cargo Shed will transform into an Arts and Crafts Zone where kids can enjoy various activities, get their faces painted, and take photos in a photobooth. The Strand will host an Event Zone and a Performance Zone. In the Event Zone, kids can explore emergency service vehicles, participate in a history scavenger hunt, play mini golf, and meet a superhero. The Performance Zone will feature local groups like Fuse drumming, Rise Dance Company, and cultural performances.
The Tauranga Waterfront green space will be an Activity Zone where kids can learn to juggle, test their circus skills, play a musical instrument, and even perform for the crowd. The Te Manawataki o Te Papa site off Willow St will be a Construction Zone, where the council will open the construction site to the public for the first time. Lastly, He Puna Manawa-Tauranga Library will be a Dinosaur Zone where families can meet Dinosaur Darren and Rista the Raptor Handler and see amazing fossils.
The event will take place along The Strand, Tauranga City Centre, from 10am-3pm. For more details, visit: https://www.mytauranga.co.nz/its-on-in-our-city-centre.
