A dragon boat club, consisting of ladies who have personally benefited from the Breast Cancer Support Services Tauranga, is giving back to the charity. They are participating in the 2024’s 100k’s in 30 Days event. The club, named Boobops, has two dragon boat teams – Moana and Aroha. These teams, made up of 53 breast cancer survivors, will take on the challenge in Tauranga Harbour this May.
The Boobops have been participating in the Aotearoa 100k’s in 30 Days challenge since its inception in 2022. This event involves walking, running, biking, paddling, or swimming 100km during May to raise funds for the Breast Cancer Support Services Tauranga.
Team member Bridget Prendiville says the team supports the charity because many members have used their services. She praises the charity for its amazing work and wants other women diagnosed with breast cancer to also receive their support.
The charity offers practical and emotional support, hope, encouragement, financial help, meals, oncology massages, and a wealth of information and resources to those diagnosed with breast cancer. The support workers, who are women who’ve coped with breast cancer themselves, share invaluable knowledge and tips.
The 100K’s in 30 Days challenge will also help the Boobops Moana team, who are 2024 national champions, prepare for the 2024 Club Crew World Championships in Ravenna, Italy, on September 3-8.
The team’s coach, Judith Butler, has set her team a challenge each month to stay focused and fit. For May, it’s the Aotearoa 100K’s in 30 Days. Bridget encourages other groups, workplaces, schools, and individuals to also participate in the event.
To participate or donate to the Aotearoa 100k’s in 30 Days, you can register, get sponsored, and complete 100 kilometres in 30 days. The challenge can be completed on foot, on wheels, or in the water. The Boobops also hope to find a sponsor for the Breast Cancer Support Services Tauranga through their participation in the challenge. To take part or donate, visit: https://100ksin30days.nz.
