The second day of the Sequence Surf Gisborne Junior Pro is happening today at Midway Beach in Gisborne, with the finals scheduled for this afternoon. The competition is part of the NZ Grom Series, the final event of which took place at the remote Tologa Bay on the East Cape on Saturday due to a large southerly swell.
The Under 14 Boys and Girls Divisions completed their rounds in 1.0m waves, while the Under 16 Boys Division started their event later in the day. Jesse Frazerhurst from Auckland maintained his top ranking with his third consecutive win of the season in the Under 14 Boys Division. He performed well throughout the day, scoring a 9.60 point heat total in the final.
Charlotte McDiarmid, a local girl, won the Under 14 Girls Division. This was her first final of the year. She beat three surfers from Mount Maunganui to secure her victory.
Later in the day, older participants joined the competition. Surfers from Mount Maunganui, Raglan and other locations won their heats. The Sequence Surf Best Manoeuvre Awards for the Under 14 Boys Division went to Logan Vester and Charlotte McDiarmid. The Volkswagen Highest Wave Score of the Day Award was won by Zade Pitkeathly with a 7.75 point ride.
The New Zealand Grom Series provides an opportunity for junior surfers to compete against their peers from around the country. The Sequence Surf Gisborne Junior Pro, now in its third season as part of the series, is one of thirteen events junior surfers can participate in. The event is supported by Sequence Surf Shop Gisborne, Creatures of Leisure, Sex Wax, Gisborne Boardriders and Grassroots Central Trust.
