Auckland Council owns a pool and fitness center in Newmarket, managed by Olympic Pools since 1994. The lease for the facility expires on 2 November. Peter Rust, director of Olympic Pools, has been asking for a 10-year lease extension for five years.
Rust’s company is ready to invest $1 million to upgrade the facility, including new gym equipment and renovated saunas and changing rooms. They have already put in over $3 million of their own money. Rust believes their proposal is a good deal for taxpayers but says the council has not explained why they are hesitant to proceed.
Six months ago, the council told Olympic Pools that the Waitematā Local Board would decide who will manage the pool. However, a decision has not yet been made, creating uncertainty for staff and users of the service. Rust noted that this uncertainty affects staff job security and users’ membership decisions.
On 1 August, Auckland Council started a review of its pools, deciding which should be leased to private operators and which should be managed by the council. Rust emphasized that Olympic Pools is in a unique position with a long-term lease.
Soon, a group of users and management will attend a local board meeting to voice their concerns. Rust is unsure what will happen if the lease is not renewed.
Genevive Sage, chair of the Waitematā Local Board, stated they are waiting for official advice before making a decision. She has asked for a report from council staff in time for their business meeting in September. She assured that the board is committed to ensuring the facility serves the community well.
