Our Vision, Mission, Goals & Values

Our Vision

A strong, respectful, and enduring relationship between New Zealand and China – grounded in understanding, friendship, and shared opportunity.

We believe that New Zealand’s strength lies in its unique identity, shaped by both te ao Māori and the diverse communities who now call Aotearoa home. Together, as New Zealanders, we share a responsibility to uphold the principles of Te Tiriti o Waitangi – partnership, participation, and protection – not just within our own country, but in how we engage with the world.

Our vision is for all New Zealanders to stand alongside our Chinese friends as equal partners, creating relationships that are open, respectful, and mutually beneficial.

Our Mission

To bring people from Aotearoa and China together to learn, share, and build genuine friendships.

We believe that understanding reduces fear, and trust reduces conflict. By strengthening people-to-people connections, we create a foundation for long-term peace, cooperation, and prosperity.

We also believe New Zealand has much to offer China – and China has much to offer New Zealand. By working together, we can find win–win solutions that share knowledge, strengthen communities, and create lasting opportunities.

Our Goals

  1. Strengthen People-to-People Connections – Build trust and friendship through cultural exchanges, community initiatives, and shared learning.

  2. Promote Mutual Understanding – Help New Zealanders better understand China’s rich history and culture, while sharing New Zealand’s unique stories, values, and heritage, including those shaped by te ao Māori.

  3. Empower Youth – Provide opportunities for all young New Zealanders to experience China and act as cultural ambassadors, recognising that they are the future of our international relationships.

  4. Foster Inclusiveness & Participation – Ensure that people from all walks of life – urban and rural, young and old – have the chance to engage in exchange programmes, scholarships, and volunteer opportunities.

  5. Support Sustainable Economic Links – Encourage trade and partnerships that help fund and sustain people-focused exchanges.

  6. Champion New Zealand’s Values – Share with pride the values that make New Zealand unique – respect for diversity, community spirit, and our commitment to Te Tiriti o Waitangi, which reminds us of our duty to act with integrity and fairness in all relationships.
