A new shared housing facility for seniors in Katikati, New Zealand, is nearing completion, with most of the required funding already secured. The Abbeyfield house will accommodate 14 residents over the age of 65, offering affordable rental housing where they can socialize with others.
The location for the house has been bought on Wills Rd, and almost $3 million has been raised for its construction through local fundraising, grants, donations, sponsorships, and other contributions. The project still needs an additional $280,000 to reach its funding goal, according to Susan Jenkins, the Executive Officer of Abbeyfield New Zealand.
Abbeyfield has received financial support from the Ministry of Housing and Urban Development’s Affordable Rental Pathway. The organization also praised Abbeyfield Western Bay of Plenty for its successful fundraising campaign.
Carole Parker, chairperson of Abbeyfield Western Bay of Plenty, said that the final stage of the fundraising campaign is now underway, with various events and activities planned. These include the opportunity for people to sponsor a garden stake, designed by local artists, for a donation of $5,000 or more.
Parker emphasized the need for the Abbeyfield house due to a shortage of affordable rental housing for seniors with limited income in Katikati. She described the house as an ideal solution for the community, where residents can maintain their independence while living in a supportive environment.
The Abbeyfield housing model, often compared to flat-sharing for seniors, allows residents to live independently in their own studio room with an ensuite, while sharing meals prepared by a housekeeper/cook in communal living areas.
There are already 14 Abbeyfield houses in New Zealand, and the Katikati house will follow the same model. These houses, present in New Zealand since 1992, are self-funded once established, with rent covering operating costs. Each house is managed by a local volunteer committee, which helps keep rent affordable and ensures residents are well supported.
