Twelve new social houses will be built on church land in Flaxmere as part of a housing project that will support the Pasifika community.
The homes, which will be prefabricated in Hutt Valley and assembled on site, will be made available to people on the public housing waiting list, with a focus on Pasifika families.
The half-acre building site is owned by the Methodist Church of NZ Hastings Samoan Parish. The church wants to help address the housing crisis in the region.
There is a severe shortage of public housing in Hawke’s Bay. In March, there were 804 applicants on the public housing waiting list in the Hastings district alone.
The $7-million project will involve Wesley Community Action and the Ministry of Housing and Urban Development. The ground-breaking ceremony is set for 17 September and the estimated competition date is late 2023.
