Auckland Airport was one of the busiest airports in June this year due to the increase in domestic travel post Covid-19 lockdown.
While overall passenger numbers were down 85% overall, the strength of the New Zealand domestic market meant that Auckland Airport was busier than some of the largest airports in Australia and Asia, even tripling the number of people who went through Hong Kong.
With border restrictions still in full force, Kiwis have set their sights on exploring some of our own backyard, trading in their summers in Europe for skiing in Queenstown.
Auckland saw 231,600 pass through its gates in June and while that figure is much lower than the 1,535,504 passengers that traveled in June 2019, it does stand out in comparison to some of the main airports around the world:
Christchurch was the most popular destination on New Zealand’s domestic network with 10 flights per day from Auckland. Great Barrier Island came in second at 7 flights per day.
