The Tauranga City Council is showcasing the amazing skills of the local disability community at this year’s International Day of Disabled Persons celebration. The event will take place at Hopukiore – Mount Drury – Reserve from 10am to 1pm on Sunday, December 3. It’s a free, family-friendly event where Tauranga’s lively disability community will be on display.
The entertainment includes live performances from singer Sophie Maude, Mount Dance Co dancers, kapa haka from Idea Services, singer Hayley Little, and the social circus act Circability. The International Day of Disabled Persons aims to increase awareness about disability issues and advocate for the rights and viewpoints of disabled individuals worldwide, including Tauranga Moana, according to Barbara Dempsey, the general manager of TCC community services.
At the event, beach wheelchairs and the TrailRider for rides to the top of Hopukiore (Mount Drury) will be available. Attendees can also participate in a circus ability workshop or try adaptive yoga. There will be activity stands and information about local support services and facilities, a photo booth, face painting, a sausage sizzle, and more.
The community is also urged to take advantage of accessible facilities such as accessible picnic tables, the accessible changing facility at Mount Drury, and beach access mats. The Tauranga City Council is proud to host this event in partnership with Parafed BOP, CCS Disability Action, and Western Bay of Plenty District Council.
