The Costume Cave, a popular costume rental shop in Wellington, is closing its doors this week. The store, which has been a staple for filmmakers, theater professionals, and partygoers since 1991, is known for its vast collection of costumes, including bright wigs, sparkly boots, pirate blouses, and period-accurate dresses.
Director Kate Railton-Jacks said the costumes have many stories behind them. The shop provided a platform for people to express themselves and live out their dreams. She said it’s exciting to see the costumes go off and lead new lives.
The decision to close the store was due to financial challenges and the struggle to keep the business sustainable, especially in recent years. Railton-Jacks said it’s been increasingly difficult to stay open, but they’re closing with their heads held high, knowing they’ve done their best.
Many of the costumes were made in-house, while others were donated items that were repurposed into costumes. As part of the closing, the store is selling costumes by the bag, inviting customers to come in, fill up a bag, and live their dreams.
