As a cold front moves up the country, MetService has warned of “possibly the coldest week of the year”, particularly for sheltered inland areas of the South Island.
The advancing front is bringing thick snow and chilly temperatures. The majority of the country is unlikely to exceed 10 C for most of the week. Parts of Central Otago can expect temperatures to dip as low as −4 C to −6 C overnight on Tuesday and are unlikely to rise above 5 C during the day.
The North Island can expect rain in the east, south and north until Thursday, when showers will continue to fall in eastern and southern areas, clearing in the south on Friday.
In the South Island, snow will continue to fall in the Canterbury High Country and foothills and will reach areas of the Kaikōura region above 500 metres on Tuesday. On Friday, snow will develop in southern parts of the South Island above 500 metres.
