Muslims all over New Zealand are preparing to celebrate Eid al-Fitr this Thursday. The Federation of Islamic Associations of New Zealand has confirmed that a new moon has been sighted, marking the end of Ramadan. Ramadan is a month-long period of fasting, prayer, and reflection for the Muslim community.
The sighting of the new moon means that Eid al-Fitr can begin. Muslims will gather at mosques for special prayers to celebrate. There will be many Eid celebrations throughout the country. One of these will be a special event at Eden Park in Auckland, starting at 8am on Thursday.
In Wellington, another special event will take place at Sky Stadium, also starting at 8am. NZ Eid Day is also planning community events in Christchurch on 14 April and Hamilton on 13 April.
