Firefighters are currently battling a fire at the North Shore Refuse Transfer Station. The fire department received the report of the fire around 8:30pm. A total of 13 fire trucks, including a ladder truck and specialist trucks, are on the scene. Thankfully, there have been no reports of injuries or homes in danger.
The fire started in a pile of rubbish at the Waste Management transfer station. According to Shaun Thornton, the assistant commander for the Waitematā fire district, the fire was large enough to require a third alarm attendance, involving about 60 firefighters. The initial crews used large hoses and an aerial truck, which releases a large amount of water, to control the fire and protect the building.
Thornton stated that the crews would continue to work on cooling down the area for several more hours. The building, which is made of steel and has a high roof, does not seem to have suffered any structural damage.
The cause of the fire is still unknown. The team plans to inspect the damage and review CCTV footage in the morning. As there are no residential houses in the vicinity, there was no need for warnings. The smoke from the fire is quickly dissipating.
