The Firearms Safety Authority is conducting its second public survey to gauge the level of confidence in the firearms licensing system. Angela Brazier, the Executive Director, emphasized the importance of both public safety and the satisfaction of licensed gun owners. She stated that the Authority has made significant strides in improving New Zealand’s firearm regulations.
The Authority’s goal is to modernize the system and implement regulatory changes to prevent firearms from falling into the wrong hands. This is done through improved licensing services and better information sharing with the police.
The surveys, which are anonymous, will involve 1700 randomly selected individuals who have recently obtained or renewed their firearms license, and 1000 members of the public who do not have a firearms license. The first survey was conducted in March and April 2022 and provided a baseline for public trust in the firearms licensing system.
Brazier explained that the feedback from these surveys will help the Authority make further improvements. Since the last survey in 2022, many changes have been made, including better engagement with both firearm and non-firearm communities. The findings from the survey will be released to the public once they have been compiled.
