The New Zealand Government, led by the Minister for Disability Issues, Hon Priyanca Radhakrishnan, has approved an additional $73.7 million for the next four years and another $40.5m in subsequent years. This funding aims to further transform the disability support system.
Priyanca Radhakrishnan stated that the Enabling Good Lives (EGL) approach is central to bringing positive change for disabled people, their families, and communities. The funds were previously set as a backup before the establishment of Whaikaha, the Ministry of Disabled People.
The Minister emphasized the Government’s dedication to transforming the disability support framework. The goal is to provide more benefits to disabled people, tāngata whaikaha Māori, and their families through the EGL method, promoting more self-determination.
The additional funds will enhance protection measures for the disabled, expand EGL to other areas, improve existing support services, and build community leadership opportunities for disabled individuals.
Radhakrishnan reiterated the importance of providing disabled people with choices and control over their decisions. The Government’s initiatives, including the establishment of Whaikaha in 2022 and committing $863.6m in the 2023 Budget, showcase their commitment to the disabled community.
While acknowledging the positive impact of this funding, Radhakrishnan also recognized the need for further improvements. The allocation of these funds is a move towards a national adaptation of the EGL approach and a comprehensive transformation of the disability system.
