A special dawn service is being organized in Katikati to mark Matariki, the start of the Māori New Year. The event, scheduled for June 28, is being hosted by several local groups including Te Rūnanga o Ngai Tamawhariua, Katch Katikati, and the Katikati Rotary Club. Matariki is a time to remember those who have passed, give thanks for the earth’s provisions, and care for the environment.
The service will be held at a marquee on an ancient fortified pā site of Ngāi Te Rangi, offering a clear view of the Matariki cluster of stars. Attendees will learn how to identify the stars and understand their cultural significance. The event aims to bring the community together to celebrate the Māori New Year.
The Tauranga Western Bay Community Event Fund has provided a $12,000 grant to make the event free for all. The fund supports community-led events that are free or low-cost. Wayne Werder, TECT Chief Executive, praised the event for educating locals about Matariki and the Māori New Year.
The service will also feature traditional ceremonies, performances, storytelling, and the planting of a Pohutukawa tree to symbolize past, present, and future unity. The event will start at 4.30am on Park Road Reserve, Katikati. More information is available on the Katch Katikati Facebook page.
