A 4.9 magnitude earthquake hit central New Zealand on Monday afternoon. It occurred 10km northeast of Picton, at a depth of 35km, according to GeoNet. Over 14,000 people reported feeling the quake.
MP Rachel Boyack posted on social media, “Crikey. That was a biggie Wellington. Everyone ok?”
Alan McMaster, a resident of Havelock near the quake’s center, said his house shook strongly. “It started small and then really rattled the house. All the glasses in my wine rack shook, and the lights swayed,” he explained. “I almost jumped under the dining table when it stopped. It was the worst I’ve felt in over six years.”
Some people described the quake differently on social media. One person felt “a gentle roll” and thought it might just be the wind. Another said the quick jolt “literally shook” their lounge wall.
