Several multimillion-dollar projects are nearing completion in the Mitre 10 Sports Park complex in Hawkes Bay.
One of the projects is the Hawke’s Bay Regional Aquatic Centre, a $32-million venture that is on schedule to open in August. The aquatic centre will house an olympic size 50-metre pool and a learn-to-swim 25-metre pool.
Sir Graeme Avery, chair of the Hawke’s Bay Community Fitness Centre Trust, said “We’d already determined there was a well-defined community need for more water space in the region.
“The Trust’s aim is the improve the health and well-being of Hawke’s Bay people and this new facility will help the region immensely. It’s going to provide something for all sectors of the community, and we think, will set Hawke’s Bay apart.”
Another project nearing completion is the 2000-sqm indoor cricket and boxing centre, which is due to be completed in October.
A 72-bed hostel, intended as accommodation for sportspeople, has already been completed.
“The new facilities collectively represent a $40m investment in the region’s sporting infrastructure and make the park one of New Zealand’s most substantial sporting villages,” Mitre 10 Sports Park CEO Jock Mackintosh said.
Sir Graeme agreed, adding “Together, these multi-sports facilities will make Mitre 10 Park unrivalled in New Zealand as a world-class sports training, competition and major events venue.”
