George Anthony Mahoni is now named among five men charged in connection with the gang shooting that led to the death of Charles Pongi in East Auckland one year ago. Mahoni, Vili Laungaue, and Lika Feterika are charged with murder. Another man, whose name is not released, also faces murder charges, while the fifth man is charged with assault, using a firearm to intimidate the Head Hunters gang, and illegal possession of a firearm. All five men have pleaded not guilty.
Charles Pongi, aged 32, was shot during a fight between about 70 gang members from the Head Hunters and Rebel MCs at Taurima Reserve in Point England on August 5. He managed to get to a hospital but died that night.
A trial is scheduled for February 2025. Detective Inspector Glenn Baldwin called the shooting an “appalling display of violence by gang members” and urged the community to assist the investigation. Police request anyone with information to contact them at 105 or Crime Stoppers anonymously at 0800 555 111, referencing file number 230805/0100.
