Police reported that over 1000 people took part in illegal street racing in Hamilton early Sunday morning. This happened around 2:15 am at the intersection of Horotiu Road and Great South Road. During the event, four police cars were rammed as some individuals threw objects, set off fireworks, and aimed lasers at officers, according to Detective Sergeant Matt Lee.
An 18-year-old man from Ōtorohanga has been charged with causing damage, dangerous driving, and possessing stolen property related to one of the ramming incidents. An officer was knocked to the ground and suffered minor injuries. The man has been released on bail and will appear in Hamilton District Court on Friday.
Police discovered a freshly painted ute that they believe was involved in the ramming after searching two properties in Ōtorohanga and looking in Huntly, where the vehicle was found. A Hamilton City councillor expressed concern about the growing reckless behavior at these illegal street races, saying it puts people in danger and disrupts neighborhoods.
The Minister of Transport mentioned that new laws might be introduced to manage these increasingly dangerous car gatherings. Police are continuing their investigation into the recent illegal activities. Detective Sergeant Lee thanked the public for their tips and warned those involved that they are reviewing video evidence from the event, promising to hold people accountable for their dangerous actions. Anyone with information is encouraged to contact the police.
