A building from the 1930s, located near Parnell Rise in central Auckland, has been refurbished for the use of Te Huia and Northern Explorer train passengers. KiwiRail has renovated the building, which was previously used for railway signals and is located a short distance from The Strand platform.
The renovated building now features a new café, a waiting lounge, toilets and showers, and a workspace area. Free WiFi will be available in the building from early next year. Additionally, a new permanent mobility ramp has been installed at The Strand platform.
KiwiRail’s chief customer and growth officer, Adele Wilson, stated that the new station building will enhance the customer experience for Northern Explorer and Te Huia passengers, while also maintaining a strong connection to New Zealand’s rich railway history.
Waikato regional councillor Angela Strange, who also chairs the Future Proof Public Transport Subcommittee, expressed confidence that the new facilities will contribute to the continued success of Te Huia, which has been regularly meeting its weekday passenger targets.
From February 8, Te Huia will introduce a third daily return service on Thursdays and Fridays, when demand is highest, and a second return service on Saturdays. KiwiRail also plans to make the new station building available for event bookings and will add an information counter where customers can inquire about Great Journeys New Zealand’s offerings.
