A new app is being created in New Zealand to offer digital driver’s licenses. The Ministry of Transport and NZTA are figuring out what laws need to be in place for this to happen. They are working with the Government Chief Digital Officer to make sure the digital licenses meet both New Zealand and international standards.
The NZ Transport Agency App will be a secure place where drivers can access all the services they need, say Transport Minister Simeon Brown and Digitising Government Minister Judith Collins. The app will make it easier for people in New Zealand to pay for Vehicle Registration and Road User Charges (RUC). It will also show when cars’ Warrants of Fitness, Vehicle Registrations and RUC end distance are due to expire, according to Brown.
In the future, the app will also let users pay tolls and check their vehicles’ safety ratings. The launch of this app will also help the government start offering digital driver’s licenses in New Zealand.
“This app will make it easier for people in New Zealand to use public transport services, making the government more accessible,” says Brown. Collins adds that the digital driver’s license is a big step towards making the government more digital, which will lead to better services and outcomes for the public.
Collins encourages New Zealand drivers to help test the new app. Their feedback will help improve the services and information available before the app is released in the app stores in the coming months. Starting Monday, users can visit nzta.govt.nz/app to learn how to download the Beta NZTA App.
