Oranga Tamariki is helping the police investigate the death of a baby in North Canterbury. The baby died at a home in Oxford on Monday. Police say the death is “unexplained.” There were earlier concerns about the baby reported to Oranga Tamariki.
On Friday, Rachel Leota, a deputy chief executive at Oranga Tamariki, said the agency learned about the baby’s death on Monday. She stated, “We are assisting police in trying to understand the circumstances that led to this.” However, she noted that they cannot share more information because it is a police investigation.
The police confirmed they are trying to find out what happened and an autopsy was performed on Tuesday. The owner of the property where the baby was found did not want to comment.
