Hayden Wilde has won New Zealand’s second medal at the Paris Olympics, securing a silver in the men’s triathlon. The races for both men and women were confirmed to proceed after river water tests showed safer bacteria levels, despite worries from heavy rains.
While the New Zealand women’s team did not win a medal, Wilde performed strongly in the men’s event. He started a minute behind the leaders in the swimming section but made up the time on the bike. He took the lead early in the running part of the race but was eventually overtaken by Great Britain’s Alex Yee in the final sprint.
Earlier on the same day, the Black Ferns Sevens beat Canada 19-12, defending their Olympic gold and giving New Zealand its first medal of the Paris Games.
