Extra police officers will be present in Ōpōtiki this weekend to oversee a planned gathering and memorial ride, according to Senior Sergeant Richard Miller, the acting area commander for Eastern Bay of Plenty. He expects several gang members to attend the event.
The police aim to ensure community safety and maintain law and order. They are communicating with the family of the individual being remembered and will continue to do so throughout the weekend. They will also monitor traffic and respond to any incidents that occur.
The police will not tolerate any antisocial or illegal behavior, including traffic offenses. Anyone caught acting in such a manner will face enforcement action, either immediately if it’s safe, or afterwards.
The police emphasize that everyone in the community has the right to feel safe. They are asking those traveling on State Highway 35 between Ōpōtiki and Maraenui this Saturday to be extra cautious.
The public is encouraged to report any illegal activities to the police so they can respond appropriately. If anyone feels immediately threatened, they should call 111. For reporting incidents after they’ve occurred, the public should contact 105 either online or by phone. Anonymous tips can also be given to Crime Stoppers at 0800 555 111.
