In a recent auction in Wellington, a coin struck with both a Canadian and New Zealand side was sold for a whopping $60,000. This mistake coin is one of only eleven in the world, making it a rare find. David Galt from Mowbray Collectables, who oversaw the auction, expressed surprise at the price, which was seven times its expected value. This sale marks a record for a kiwi coin in New Zealand.
Another highlight of the event was the sale of a unique New Zealand halfpenny error coin. This coin, featuring Latin words instead of English, fetched $19,000 – double its estimated price. Furthermore, a Hongkong and Shanghai Bank $10 banknote from 1920 was auctioned off for $18,000.
Galt, who also serves as the president of the New Zealand Royal Numismatic Society, shared that there has been increasing overseas interest in their coin auctions. This has been evident through the rise in online bidding, particularly since the onset of Covid. Galt proudly stated that the top three auction items would remain in New Zealand.
Mowbray Collectables will also host a stamp auction on 23 September, featuring over 800 lots of top New Zealand stamps and postal history items.
