Two search and rescue helicopters have completed a search off the Gisborne coast after reports of what could be a dead body in the water.
A spokesperson from Maritime NZ said the search started after a report from a cruise ship passenger on Friday evening.
The spokesperson confirmed there were no sightings of any people in the water and the search has now been suspended overnight and is not expected to resume unless further information comes to light.
Earlier, a passenger on the Ovation of the Seas saw something in the water which they thought could be a dead body.
Flight trackers showed helicopters scanning the area between Gisborne and Mahia on the East Coast.
The area that was searched is approximately 25 nautical miles off the coast of Gisborne, the Maritime NZ spokesperson said.
