The search for a missing person from a boat in Auckland’s Manukau Harbour will continue today, according to police.
On Tuesday night, Coastguard reported that two people faced trouble on a boat near Puketutu Island. One person swam back to shore and informed the police, but the other is still missing. He was last seen at 4:50 PM on Tuesday.
A police spokesperson said, “A search will resume this morning for a man missing in the Manukau Harbour after a small boat sank near Puketutu Island.” Search efforts were paused Tuesday night due to darkness and tough conditions.
Today, the search will involve air, sea, and land efforts, with police conducting searches on Puketutu Island. The police Eagle helicopter will also participate.
The Coastguard added that the boat was towed back to shore on Tuesday night. They confirmed they received a distress call at 5:50 PM and acknowledged that another person is still missing.
Volunteers from Coastguard’s Titirangi and Papakura teams joined the search. Coastguard mentioned that conditions were difficult on Tuesday night due to waves and darkness.
But the volunteers are dedicated and are using three rescue boats to find the missing person. The hovercraft from Auckland Airport and the Westpac Rescue Helicopter also helped in the search earlier.
