The decision by the NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi to eliminate the fee for retaking driver’s license exams from October 1 has resulted in a significant increase in test bookings. Now, there is no cost to book, cancel, or reschedule a test, with only an application fee required. This change has led to more people taking tests to get their full license, according to the agency.
In October, the waiting time for the restricted driver’s license test in Otago and Southland was 25 days, up from eight days in October of the previous year. By November, the wait time had increased to 46 days, much longer than the eight-day wait in November 2022. The national wait time was 17 days in October, compared to 10 days in October of the previous year. In November, it rose again to 37 days, compared to 11 days in November 2022.
Due to the increased demand for driving tests, the transport agency is encouraging people to practice and prepare adequately to pass the driver’s license tests on their first try. The goal of removing the retesting fee is to motivate people to progress through the driver licensing system and obtain a full license, says NZTA land transport deputy director Neil Cook. This is part of an effort to enhance overall road safety.
Last month, reports indicated that young Southlanders were failing learner license tests more often than their peers nationwide. However, they are more likely to pass their restricted and full license tests. Geoph Keach, an Automobile Association Invercargill driving instructor, advises that regular practice is essential for passing the test. He suggests driving several times a week to build muscle memory and confidence.
