Kids will soon enjoy a new playground in Te Puna. The playground will be built at Maramatanga Park, located at the upper corner of Te Puna and Tangitu Roads. Construction will start on Monday, April 8 and is expected to finish in five weeks, depending on the weather.
The playground, costing $323,000, will feature a natural play area, a slide, swings, a spinning ‘Supernova’, and a flying fox. The project is jointly funded by the Council and a $190,000 grant from the Lion Foundation. The design was influenced by community feedback, with the flying fox being a highly requested play equipment.
Marcia Velloen, the Council’s project manager, said that neighborhood playgrounds are essential for communities. They offer a healthy space for children to play and a place for families to meet and connect. During the design phase, the local community was invited to share their ideas on the type of play equipment they wanted.
A flying fox was a popular choice among many kids and young people, and the council is excited to see it in use. For everyone’s safety, signs will be put up and the site will be fenced off while work is being done by Council contractors.
