Finance Minister Nicola Willis was angry to learn that women in Wellington were not getting toast after giving birth.
The Government has decided to ensure that new mothers can still enjoy toast and tea after this “crazy” choice to remove the service in maternity wards. Many people in Wellington expressed their concerns on social media after the change.
Willis shared her feelings on First Up: “I clearly remember that first cup of milky tea and vegemite toast after delivering my first baby at Wellington Hospital. It felt like a gourmet meal, and I was so thankful to the nurse who brought it to me.”
She was frustrated that some women were missing out on this simple pleasure. Health Minister Shane Reti also felt the same frustration and acted to make sure mothers in Wellington would continue to receive their toast, according to Willis. She believed that the decision was not due to financial issues in the health sector.
