A trust fund is being set up to look after the health of the Waikato River as authorities agree in principle for Auckland to take more water from it.
As part of the agreement, Auckland can take 25 million litres a day from the Hamilton City Council’s unused allocation and up to 50m per day from other unused allowances. In return, a multi-million dollar fund will be established to fund projects which will improve water quality and reduced pollution of the river.
