The Electoral Commission is urging voters in Tauranga City Council to confirm their enrollment for the council election on July 20, 2024. Deputy Chief Executive Operations, Anusha Guler, reports that over 110,000 people, or 89% of eligible voters in the area, are currently enrolled.
In the upcoming election, voters will be choosing councillors from eight general wards and one Māori ward, as well as a mayor. Māori voters have the option to register on either the Māori electoral roll or the general electoral roll. Those on the Māori roll will vote for a candidate in the Māori ward, while those on the general roll will vote for candidates in the general wards.
A recent law change allows voters of Māori descent to switch their roll at any time, except in the three months leading up to a general election, local elections, or a parliamentary by-election. The Commission is informing enrolled Māori voters that if they wish to switch from the Māori roll to the general roll (or vice versa) before the council election, they must do so by midnight on April 19.
