Wellington, the capital of New Zealand, has been named as one of the top travel destinations for LGBTQI+ tourists in 2024 by Vacationer Magazine, a US-based travel publication. Other cities on the list include Costa Rica, Madrid, Vienna, Paris, and Stockholm. The magazine, which reaches over 400,000 people monthly, praised Wellington for its beautiful waterfront, sandy beaches, busy harbor, and lovely wooden houses. The city’s attractions such as Zealandia, the Botanic Gardens, and the Katherine Mansfield House & Garden were also highlighted.
Author Jeffrey James Keyes, who recently visited Wellington, described the city as “a true gem”. He was impressed by the city’s inclusivity and the variety of activities available, from dining at incredible restaurants to touring Wētā Workshop, a special effects and prop company, and exploring nature at Zealandia. He encouraged readers, especially Americans, to consider Wellington as a travel destination instead of just Sydney, Auckland, or Queenstown.
Malcolm Vaughan, co-owner of S&M’s bar on Cuba Street, one of the venues mentioned in the article, was pleased to see Wellington recognized. He invited US readers to visit the city and experience its hospitality and diverse LGBTQI+ community.
WellingtonNZ chief executive John Allen was also delighted with the recognition, saying it reflected the city’s vibrant and welcoming nature. He added that Wellington is a city of diverse cultures and experiences, and welcomes anyone who wishes to visit or move there.
Wellington hosts several large LGBTQI+ events, including the annual Wellington Pride Festival in March, which dates back to the first Newtown Lesbian and Gay Fair in 1986. The Pride Parade will also return in March next year.
