A pilot project is currently in progress to improve Tauranga city centre. The project includes expanding footpaths, creating greener spaces, and introducing a one-way traffic system on certain streets. These changes will be in effect for at least two years as the city centre undergoes transformation.
Work on the project began earlier this week, with most of the construction taking place at night to minimize disruption to motorists and businesses during the day. The project is expected to be completed by April.
Tom McEntyre, Tauranga City Council’s team leader of transport development, expressed appreciation for the public’s patience during this time. He explained that the changes aim to control vehicle speed, reduce intersection difficulties, and enhance visibility for drivers, pedestrians, and cyclists.
The project has been strategically scheduled to avoid conflicting with events like Children’s Day and the Jazz Festival. It also aims to have the changes in place before nearby construction projects begin. The new one-way streets will lessen the need for road closures during these projects by providing more space for construction activities.
While most of the work will be finished this month, some additional work will take place later with minimal expected disruption. The pilot project will be monitored and reviewed to determine if the changes should be kept, modified, or extended to other parts of the city centre.
