The week will start calmly, but it will change soon. Most areas will enjoy good weather until Wednesday. However, the MetService warns of wetter and windier conditions later in the week, with low-level snow in the south.
On Sunday, MetService recorded around 13,000 lightning strikes before 6am Monday, with about 7,300 happening over land, mainly in western regions.
On Monday morning, the only weather warning was for possible snow on the Milford Road. Most areas were expected to have a nice day, with a few showers possible. The west of the South Island is expected to be the wettest.
In Auckland, showers were forecast to clear Monday morning, making the week mostly dry, except for rain on Friday. Wellington is expected to be mostly fine on Monday but might see a few afternoon showers in the northern suburbs. Tuesday and Wednesday will be mainly dry, but Thursday could bring strong winds and occasional rain.
Christchurch may get some morning showers on Monday, which should clear up. Tuesday and Wednesday are expected to be mainly fine, but temperatures will drop to 0°C overnight Tuesday into early Wednesday. Showers are likely on the last two working days of the week.
Thursday may be the stormiest day, with the MetService predicting strong winds in southern North Island, heavy rain moving north through the South Island, and snow down to 400 meters in Fiordland. There is also a chance of heavy rain in parts of the North Island on Friday.
