Youth Voices Action (YVA) is organizing YouthFest, a youth festival aimed at showcasing the talents of young people in the community. The event will take place on May 25 at the Historic Village during Youth Week. YVA, formerly known as the Tauranga Youth Development Team, is dedicated to empowering young voices and making communities more representative.
Erika Harvey, the general manager of YVA, explains that the organization has a Youth Advisory Panel that shapes its initiatives. The 2024 Youth Ambassador is Gabrielle Stimpson, a 15-year-old from Otumoetai College. Stimpson believes that YVA provides young people with the opportunity to work with different people and make a difference among youth.
YVA encourages youth to share their opinions and express their feelings about the system they want to change. They aim to provide a safe environment for young people to discuss their issues and potential solutions. Stimpson emphasizes that YVA is about making sure young people are heard and that they have the opportunity to give feedback and take initiative on issues they care about.
YVA members learn to compromise between opinions and come up with solutions. Erika Harvey highlights that participants learn to find common ground and collaborate with those they might not typically choose as friends.
YouthFest will feature youth bands, young entrepreneurs showcasing their products, and more. The event is not just a celebration, but also an opportunity for young people to explore their interests, boost their confidence, and have fun in a safe space. YVA is seeking sponsorships from local businesses for the event.
YVA also organizes other events like 100% Summer, Jammin’ in the Park, and FluroFest, which is held annually during mental health awareness week. The organization also tackles political issues. For example, Ara, a 19-year-old member of the Youth Panel, wants to see legislative changes to fast-track abuse cases against young people.
Being part of YVA offers opportunities to get involved in events, gain volunteering experience, work with a variety of organizations and people, learn how to give formal feedback, and make a difference. The organization is currently seeking corporate sponsors and funding for YouthFest.
