2026 Volunteer Programme – Applications Now Open
Applications are now open for the 2026 HONGI China Volunteer Programme — a unique opportunity for young New Zealanders to live in China for three months, support local schools, and take part in meaningful, two-way cultural exchange.
For many volunteers, this experience becomes a turning point: building confidence, broadening worldviews, and creating lifelong connections across cultures. In 2026, the programme enters its most ambitious year yet.
Following the success of the 2024 pilot and expanded 2025 cohorts, the 2026 programme will welcome more than 100 volunteers across two intakes, with new regions, new partner institutions, and deeper community engagement across China.
If you would like a full overview of the programme’s purpose, structure, and values, we recommend first reading the main HONGI Volunteer Programme page. This page focuses specifically on what to expect in 2026 and how to apply.
What’s New in 2026
The expansion of the programme reflects strong trust from Chinese partner institutions and growing interest from New Zealand communities. Host schools, universities, and local governments have actively requested to continue — and expand — their involvement.
In 2026, the programme will feature:
-
a broader range of placement locations across China
-
increased volunteer numbers across two intakes
-
new host schools, universities, and community activities
-
strengthened on-the-ground support for volunteers
This growth is a sign of a programme that works — for volunteers, host institutions, and partner communities alike.

2026 Placement Locations
In 2026, volunteers may be placed in the following regions:
-
Jiangxi Province
-
Sichuan Province
-
Fujian Province
-
Guangdong Province
-
Shanxi Province
-
Gansu Province
-
Tianjin Municipality
These locations span coastal regions, historic heartlands, fast-growing urban centres, and quieter inland communities. Each offers a distinct pace of life, food culture, landscape, and local traditions.
One of the most valuable aspects of the programme is discovering that China is not one place, but many. Placements are carefully matched in collaboration with Chinese partners, taking into account volunteer backgrounds, interests, and community connections wherever possible.
2026 Intake Dates
The programme runs across two intakes:
-
Intake 1: approximately 15 March – 15 June 2026
-
Intake 2: approximately 15 September – 15 December 2026
Volunteers must be able to commit to the full three-month period. Some volunteers continue remote work or study during the programme, provided it does not interfere with school responsibilities or training commitments.
What to Expect as a 2026 Volunteer
As a volunteer, you will be based at a host school or tertiary institution, where you support English-language learning and take part in everyday school and community life.
Your role may include assisting in classrooms, supporting speaking and listening practice, joining school events, and sharing aspects of life in New Zealand. Many volunteers also choose to share te reo Māori, kapa haka, sport, music, or other personal interests as part of a genuine cultural exchange.
You do not need teaching qualifications or prior experience in China. What matters most is your openness, reliability, curiosity, and willingness to engage respectfully with a different culture.
First-time international travellers are welcome, and ongoing local support is provided throughout the programme.

Fully Funded – What’s Covered
The 2026 programme remains fully funded for successful volunteers.
The programme covers:
-
international flights
-
visas and documentation
-
comprehensive insurance
-
accommodation arranged by host institutions
-
food support
-
mobile phone data and connectivity
-
a modest living stipend
This support covers essential living and participation costs. Many volunteers choose to bring additional personal savings for optional travel, social activities, or shopping, but this is not required.
Training and Preparation
All 2026 volunteers complete mandatory pre-departure training delivered by Eastern Bridge Education, a registered New Zealand Private Training Establishment.
Training includes a combination of in-person weekends and online learning, covering:
-
basic Chinese language and communication
-
Chinese culture, etiquette, and social norms
-
classroom support and public speaking
-
health, safety, and wellbeing
-
practical life skills for living in China
Training is designed to be practical, supportive, and social — helping volunteers build confidence and connect with each other before departure. Upon completion, volunteers receive a China Readiness Certificate.

Is This Programme Right for Me?
The programme is well suited to young New Zealanders who are open-minded, adaptable, and willing to step outside their comfort zone. Many volunteers apply with little or no prior travel experience, and confidence grows quickly once in China.
Volunteers are supported by host schools, local coordinators, and the wider volunteer cohort. The expectation is not perfection, but commitment, respect, and a genuine willingness to learn.
