業界団体であるエナジー・リソース・アオテアロアは、禁止措置が解除されたことを喜んでいると表明した。CEOのジョン・カーネギーは、この決定は賢明かつ実践的であると述べています。彼は、安全なガス供給が再生可能エネルギーへの移行に役立つと考えています。
カーネギーは、ガスを利用するか、気候変動の目標を達成するかは選択できないと指摘しました。彼は、ガスの使用量を増やしても、気候変動の目標を達成できると考えています。また、ガス部門は非常に厳しい環境規制に従っているため、石油やガスの生産による環境へのリスクは最小限に抑えられると強調しました。
しかし、誰もがこの決定に同意するわけではない。緑の党の共同党首であるクロエ・スワーブリックは、政府が国際的な助言を無視していると批判した。彼女は、2021年から石油、石炭、ガスの新規プロジェクトを中止するという国際エネルギー機関の勧告に言及した。
労働党もこの決定を批判し、ニュージーランドの気候変動への対応が大きく後退したと批判した。2018年に禁止令を導入した労働エネルギー担当スポークスマンのメーガン・ウッズ氏は、この新政策は再生可能エネルギーへの移行を助けるものではなく、化石燃料企業が環境を利用できるようになるだろうと話した。彼女は、これによって今後何年にもわたって排出量が固定されることになる可能性があると警告した。
