More than 1000 signatures, from supporters in 40 countries, have been obtained on a petition to get a “white wine” emoji created.
The petition, launched by New Zealand Wine Growers, will form part of a submission that the organisation plans to present to the Unicode Consortium, the body responsible for approving new emoji icons, this month.
New Zealand Winegrowers global PR manager Juliana Foster said it was exciting to see their campaign receiving support from people around the world. “We have been actively promoting this campaign in New Zealand, USA, Canada, UK, Ireland, Australia, China, and Japan. So, to see people signing up from countries where we don’t have an active presence such as Cyprus, Malta and Vietnam, has been wonderful to see and proves this is something the whole world is behind,” Forster said.
Although California-based winery Kendall-Jackson submitted a similar proposal in 2019, it failed to get approval, with the Unicode Consortium saying that they will “continue to consider ‘white wine’ emoji for future addition.”
The outcome of this month’s submission should be heard at the end of the year.
