Qualmark’s Sustainable Tourism Business (STB) Criteria has earned the GSTC-Recognised Status from the Global Sustainable Tourism Council (GSTC). It is the first in New Zealand to get this recognition for meeting global sustainability standards.
Qualmark, a part of Tourism New Zealand, confirms a business’s quality in tourism. With over 2,000 members, it updated its criteria in May to match the GSTC’s standards.
This GSTC status assures that Qualmark businesses follow global criteria in sustainable management, benefiting the local community, preserving cultural heritage, and reducing pollution. However, it doesn’t change the existing Qualmark assessment method.
Qualmark accommodation providers might join GSTC’s Market Access programme, where top online travel agents highlight sustainable stays.
Steven Dixon, the general manager of Qualmark, believes this global recognition will boost businesses and promote New Zealand’s shift towards regenerative tourism. This approach encourages visitors to interact with local communities and benefit the area’s economy and nature.
Clinton Farley, from The Hotel Britomart, emphasised tourism businesses’ role in sustainability. Vanessa McKay, from Carino Wildlife Cruises, highlighted the country’s dedication to global sustainability.
