The Police Commissioner is leaving to become the head of the Social Investment Agency. Finance Minister Nicola Willis has a strong interest in this Agency, which aims to help vulnerable people in society. The government initially provided funding for the Agency, but the methods and size of the fund are still not clear.
The Social Investment Agency uses data and evidence to find better ways to support those in need, working with local organizations rather than just government. Willis believes this approach is common sense, stating, “prevention is better than cure.” The goal is to help vulnerable people with early interventions, such as education and health support, rather than relying on government aid later.
This idea of social investment was first promoted by former Prime Minister Bill English. He focused on statistics showing that early intervention can improve outcomes for children at risk, reducing future government costs. For example, children from troubled homes are often more likely to struggle in school, be dependent on benefits, or end up in prison.
Willis emphasized that social investment is not just about spending more money but using current funds more effectively to achieve better outcomes. She aims to create a fund to test new methods and improve social services. This fund will start with a modest amount next year but may grow over time.
Willis also plans to set up a new advisory group, the Social Investment Board, to provide feedback and advice but not to create policies. The Board will have between six to eight members, paid according to government guidelines.
The government is also aware of the need for responsible data use and aims to maintain public trust while utilizing data to help those in need.
Andrew Coster, the current Police Commissioner, will take over the Social Investment Agency soon. He views this new role as a chance to positively impact the community, addressing issues right before they escalate into bigger problems. While his past relationship with some politicians was challenging, the current government has praised his work.
Overall, the new Agency aims to improve lives through focused social investments that benefit both communities and taxpayers.
