Rubbish and Recycling

Kerbside Rubbish Pick Up

Your wheelie bin should be your last choice when disposing of your rubbish.

We all need to stop and think before we put something in our bin: Could I have reduced, reused or repaired this? By making small changes in the way we buy and look after things, we can reduce our rubbish and help do our bit for the planet. All our small changes will make a big difference.

Every household in the kerbside collection area has been provided with a 120L wheelie bin for their rubbish.

You can mark your bin to help identify it.

    Some ideas are

  • Tie a bright ribbon on the handle
  • Wrap coloured tape around the handle
  • Paint your house number on the side

When do I put my rubbish and recycling out?

To find out when you should put your rubbish out for Council collection, go to the Council official page and enter your address. Please have your wheelie bin and crates out by 7am on your collection day.

Placing your rubbish wheelie bin kerbside

Your rubbish wheelie bin must be at the kerbside by 7am on your collection day.

  • Your wheelie bin must be placed at the kerb with the arrows on the lid pointing towards the road.
  • The wheelie bin must not be overfilled and the lid must be closed.
  • It should not weigh more than 20kg (normal household rubbish will not exceed this).
  • There should be half-a-metre space between wheelie bins to allow the mechanical arm to grab and lift each bin.

Wheelie bins need to be placed as close to the kerb as possible. Wheelie bins must not be in the middle of the footpath.

If you live on a private road, your bin must be placed at the kerbside of the nearest public road.

Kerbside Recycling

A Solid Waste Survey in 2019 showed that more than 60 per cent of what is going into our rubbish bins and then into the landfill could have been composted or recycled, which is why we want you to Make Landfill Your Last Choice.

Last year we collected almost 3484 tonnes of recyclable material from the kerbside (glass: 1976; paper/cardboard: 930; plastic/cans: 578) – with almost all of it recycled here in New Zealand.

You can recycle:

  • Glass
  • Paper and cardboard
  • Plastics (1, 2 and 5) and cans

Recycling in 4 easy steps

1. Wash, remove lids and flatten cardboard

Wash out jars, bottles and cans; remember no food or liquids.

Wash, Remove, Flatten

2. Any Council crate; Just separate

Each household within the Hastings kerbside recycling zone has three crates for recycling. Recycling will only be collected in Council-issued crates. You can put out multiple crates with the same items (for example two crates of paper), but don’t mix the different categories in the same crate.

Separate items into the following categories:
Three Crates

3. Stop before the top

Don’t overfill your recycling crates.

Recycling outside of the crates will not be collected, for example large cardboard boxes.

If you have excess recycling, you can save it and put it out another week or take it to one of ourfree recycling drop off centres

Overfilled Crates

If it’s windy, pop your heavier crate (bottles) on top of your crate of plastics or paper and cardboard, so it does not blow onto the street.

Clock

4. Kerbside by 7am

Place your recycling out at the kerbside by 7AM ON YOUR COLLECTION DAY. Place crates as close to the kerb edge as possible; not in the middle of the footpath.

To find out when you should put your recycling out for Council collection, go to the Council official page and enter your address. Please have your wheelie bin and crates out by 7am on your collection day.

Got lots of garden waste?

Both of our transfer stations accept garden waste (also called green waste). Garden waste needs to be kept separate from other waste, so it can be composted. The cost of getting rid of garden waste at a transfer station is cheaper than general rubbish.

There is also a commercial company that accepts residential green waste in Awatoto, Napier. For the details, see their website:BioRich.
