- Hastings District Council operates cemeteries in:
- Hastings
- Havelock North
- Puketapu
- Mangaroa
The Hawke’s Bay Crematorium and Chapel is located within the Hastings Cemetery and is operated by Hastings District Council.
Opening hours
The cemeteries are open to visitors all year round.
Burials are carried out on weekdays between the hours of 10am and 4pm in summer (to allow time for staff to refill the grave). In winter burials are carried out on weekdays between the hours of 10am and 3pm.
Saturday burials are carried out between 10am and noon.
Burials outside of these hours may be agreed with management for an additional fee to cover costs (see below).
Burials and cremations are not available on the following days
- New Year’s Day
- Anzac Day
- Good Friday
- Hawke’s Bay Anniversary
- Christmas Day
After hours
After hours services and burials are available for an additional fee.
Summer after hours
- Monday to Friday: 4pm to 5pm
- Saturday: 8am to 10am and noon to 5pm
- Sundays, public holidays: 10am to 2pm.
Winter after hours
- Saturday: 8am to 10am and noon to 5pm
- Sundays, public holidays: 10am to 2pm.
Hawke’s Bay Crematorium and Chapel
A new chapel and crematorium have been built at Hastings cemetery (opened 2018).
The replacement of the crematorium has required a new Resource Consent from Hawke’s Bay Regional Council. It includes two new conditions
1. Caskets constructed of the following materials shall not be cremated
- Corrugated cardboard
- Plastics (including fibreglass and laminates)
- Lead
- Steel
- Zinc
2. All bright-ware and other extraneous plastic and metal attachments shall be removed from the casket prior to cremation.
(Handles will be removed from caskets prior to cremation)
